Retiring a Horse Through Turning For Home

Since 2008, PTHA’s Turning For Home, Inc. has served Parx owners by providing safe, responsible retirement for their racehorses—leaving no reason for any Parx-based Thoroughbred to face an uncertain or unsafe future.

Our groundbreaking funding model brings together support from:

  • Parx owners and trainers

  • Pennsylvania breeders

  • Parx jockeys

  • PTHA horsemen

  • Private donors

  • Parx management

Together, this collective effort has provided a safe retirement for over 4,560 racehorses who raced at Parx.

What We Provide

Turning For Home offers immediate assistance for:

  • Emergency surgeries and veterinary evaluations

  • Rehabilitation and retraining

  • Responsible rehoming through a network of approved, experienced Partner Farms along the East Coast

Donated funds go directly to the farms and veterinarians who care for TFH horses during their transition into second careers.

How We Operate

Our team works tirelessly to find the right adopters—people who will appreciate our Thoroughbreds and enjoy them for a lifetime. We maintain digital files and long-term tracking on every horse, provide guidance to adopters, and are always prepared to bring a TFH graduate back for additional rehab, retraining, or rehoming when needed.

Every TFH horse is Backed for Life—with a network that ensures they are never without a safe option.

Why Choose Turning For Home?

We are the model aftercare program in the racing industry, helping thousands of Thoroughbreds transition into safe, productive, and happy second careers. If you'd like your retiring horse featured in our Success Stories, we're ready to help.

How to Get Started

Trainers and owners wishing to retire a horse can:

  • Visit the TFH office (inside the Parx Administration Building on the backside)

  • Call Danielle Montgomery at 215-808-7562

  • Or email the required paperwork (see buttons above)

We’re here to support you—and to make sure every horse that gave their best on the track has the chance to shine in their next chapter.

  • CRITERIA FOR INCOMING HORSES
The horse must be continuously stabled on the grounds of Parx Racing for 90 days prior to the time of application into TFH, or have raced in the last 30 days with a trainer that is based at Parx for at least six months of the year. Horses at training farms must have raced at Parx in the previous 30 days from the application and must have raced over 50% of its races at Parx in the previous 365 days. TFH will keep the waiting list shorter than four weeks. Surgical cases move to the front of the waiting list. Parx Owners support the program, but individual donations are encouraged and support our outreach, education, and allow us to help even more of the needy horses sent our way. Public support and outreach Saves Lives!
  • PROCEDURE FOR INCOMING HORSES
Horse Intake Instructions for Trainers and Owners Before retiring a horse through Turning For Home, please follow these steps to ensure a smooth and secure transition: 1. Required Forms Complete and submit the TFH Horse Intake Form and the SOLD AS RETIRED FROM RACING Form (must be notarized). Forms can be found on www.turningforhome.org/forms or requested via email. 2. Foal Papers & Jockey Club Status Submit the foal papers, or request that digital papers be transferred to Turning For Home, Inc. as Owner/Manager. Don't forget to transfer the horse in HISA to PTHA's Turning For Home. 3. Required Documentation Provide proof of a current negative Coggins test. Submit veterinary evaluation forms, including radiographs and any necessary diagnostics (especially for injury retirements). Colts or stallions will be gelded at the appropriate time, as determined by the attending veterinarians. A TFH representative will take conformation photos for official retirement with The Jockey Club. 4. Ownership & Responsibility By delivering a horse to TFH, the owner agrees to transfer full ownership of the horse to Turning For Home, Inc. Liability, care costs, and risk of loss remain with the owner until the horse is placed with a TFH Partner Farm. 5. Ongoing Records & Communication Digital records are kept on every horse in our program, including photos, vet records, and status updates. Owner will receive confirmation from the Jockey Club to sign as retired from racing at provided email. Updates are always available—just ask. You can also follow our social media for public updates and highlights of our horses' second careers at the Partner Farm pages, located here or on Facebook, Turning For Home Inc. A Note of Thanks Turning For Home is incredibly grateful for the commitment of the trainers and owners at Parx Racing. The responsibility of aftercare begins with you—and thanks to your efforts, thousands of Thoroughbreds have been retired with dignity and respect. We are proud to continue that commitment through professional rehabilitation, retraining, and responsible placement.
  • PARX ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
Re: Parx Racing’s Zero Tolerance Policy Towards Horsemen Responsible for Sending Horses to Auction/Slaughter/Kill Buyers Any owner, member of an owner partnership, or trainer who is found responsible for sending a horse or horses to auction where they could be purchased by dealers/kill buyers for slaughter, or for sending a horse to slaughter will have his/her backstretch privileges revoked, will be denied entry to race for all horses owned in whole or in partnership, and said horses must be removed immediately from the Parx backstretch. In the event that ownership of horse(s) is transferred, the transfer must be to a third party who is not family related to the original owner/owners, and an affidavit must be signed by the third party attesting to that fact.
